Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS)

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) has a robust program of research in collaboration with The University of Manitoba, The University of Winnipeg and Shared Health Manitoba. Medical Directors along with the Quality Improvement Branch work with the WFPS research coordinator, paramedics, clinician scientists, and other researchers to advance prehospital research as an operational mission of the service, with a focus on knowledge translation and implementation.

Our current research focus is in the following domains:

1. Community Paramedicine – A focus on common callers and 911 recidivism as it relates to the implementation of a community paramedic program.

2. Spinal Immobilization – The head neck kinematics as it relates to prehospital care in trauma.

3. Learning, performance and psychological skill usage in paramedicine.

4. Cardiac Sciences – gender differences in prehospital treatment of ACS.

Opportunities for medical students, residents, and other trainees can be accommodated through a conjoint program of supervision between the WFPS and the University of Manitoba.

Investigators who would consider supervising/mentoring students include:

Erin Weldon MD FRCPC(EM), Associate Professor, Research Director, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Manitoba Associate Medical Director, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service
